What is MFA & How to Set it Up

A quick article to help you understand MFA and why we have implemented it. 

What is MFA?

Multifactor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of protection to your accounts and sensitive data. When signing in, users are prompted to verify their identity through a second method, making unauthorised access significantly harder.

Why is MFA important?

Setting up MFA greatly strengthens your organisation's security, ensuring that stolen or compromised credentials alone aren't enough to breach your systems. For most organisations, MFA isn't just a best practice; it's a critical security requirement.

MFA blocks the vast majority of automated attacks on online accounts. According to study, 99.9% of compromised Microsoft accounts lacked MFA.

How does MFA work?

MFA works by requiring additional verification information (factors). Users can’t log in with only usernames and passwords; they must provide additional proof of identity.

MFA with OnePlan

All OnePlan accounts are required to have MFA enabled. If you have not yet set it up, you will be prompted to do so on your third login.

Our MFA is compatible with the following authenticator apps:

  • Authy

  • Google Authenticator

  • Apple Passwords

  • Microsoft Authenticator

How to set up MFA in OnePlan

  1. To set up MFA, click ‘Set up MFA now’ and ‘Continue’

  2. Scan the MFA QR code with your mobile device. This will take you to a compatible authenticator app, which will then provide a code.

  3. If you already have an authenticator app on your device, you can scan the QR code from this app to set up. Alternatively, if you use your camera, you will likely be taken to the default authenticator built into your device, i.e Apple Passwords

  4. Enter the code seen in your chosen authenticator app

  5. You are now set up. You will be asked to enter your OTP each time you log in going forward.

Logging in with MFA

Once MFA is set up, you will be prompted to enter a one-time passcode (OTP) each time you log in to OnePlan. Open your authenticator app to find your current OTP and enter it when prompted. Note that OTP codes refresh every 30 seconds, so make sure to use the code before it expires.
